October was Female Reproductive and Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Each year, Freedom To Know Wellness supports the annual WAVE OF LIGHT event by featuring one of its Ontario-based event facilitators, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) Network. As Freedom To Know Wellness continues to champion these causes, we dedicate the next few episodes to showcasing women from these experiences. Today, we are discussing Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) disorder, also known as pelvic floor pain or pelvic pain. In Canada, 14-24% of women of reproductive age suffer from Chronic Pelvic Pain, and over 14% of Canadian women have experienced some form of acute pelvic pain. CPP disorders is not exclusively a female condition. Many men experience this condition, with about 2-16% of men in North America. CPP can cause constant or intermittent pain. A gynecologist will diagnose and refer the patient to a pelvic floor physiotherapist. It can be an upward battle to correct this condition or to find some reprieve. But it is possible.
In today's podcast, my guest Aisha Nicholson, shares her journey with Chronic Pelvic Floor Pain, her experience with medical gaslighting and her struggle in search of a gynecologist and pelvic floor therapist to treat her condition. Aisha's chronic pain began as a teenager, impacting her quality of life. Yet despite living with chronic- even debilitating pain, she went on to be a professional dancer and a Reiki Master, using this technique to help manage her pain. Aisha received her Reiki certification at GTA Reiki, in Markham, Ontario.
